2016 Christmas Appeal
The Archbishop’s Christmas Appeal for LifeLink 2016
The Archbishop's message this year is inspired by the words of Pope Francis in an interview he gave shortly after being elected as Pope. Reflecting on the role of the Church in today's world, among other things, Pope Francis said:
"The thing the Church needs most today is the ability to heal wounds and to warm the hearts of the faithful; it needs nearness, proximity. I see the Church as a field hospital after battle. It is useless to ask a seriously injured person if he has high cholesterol and about the level of his blood sugars! You have to heal his wounds. Then we can talk about everything else.
Heal the wounds, heal the wounds…
and you have to start from the ground up"
Archbishop Costelloe includes in his message, "Throughout the years of his public ministry Jesus reached out to those who were in need of healing: to the blind, to the lame, to the deaf, to the paralysed. He also reached out to those whose spirits needed healing: to the lonely, to the rejected, to the grieving, to the confused and lost. And lastly of course he reached out with healing to the sinner offering mercy, compassion and forgiveness.
He healed people's wounds, physical, emotional and spiritual – and in doing so he warmed the hearts of those whose hearts had grown cold."
The Archbishop also said "Among the many ways in which we can respond to this urgent appeal of the Lord to reach out to others LifeLink occupies a special place in our Archdiocese. Through supporting LifeLink as generously as we can, we enable practical assistance to come to those who need it most.
When we cannot reach out directly ourselves to encounter the Lord in those who suffer, we can do so through those who, because of our financial support, warm the hearts and heal the wounds of people in desperate need.
What better gift could we give this Christmas than the gift of hope? What better way could we find of celebrating Christmas this year than to have a share in healing the broken and warming the hearts of the lonely, the discouraged and the fearful? And if we do, perhaps we will find that our own hearts grow warmer too and our wounds begin to heal."
Archbishop Costelloe hopes that his annual Christmas Appeal will this year raise a minimum of $650,000 for people in need, right here at home in WA.
